Cornfield (Vliehors) Shooting Range - EHVL, the Netherlands 2008
Cornfield Range is an aircraft gunnery range, situated on the Vliehors on the island Vlieland, one of the islands which lay in the north of the Netherlands. It is the only place in the Netherlands where fighters and bombers can practice with both practice and live ammunitions. Airplanes of the Netherlands air force and different other NATO countries are daily visitors of the range. They can hire time, named slots, to let their pilots practice their skills at the range.
Every now and then you get the chance to visit to the Shooting Range on the island of Vlieland Wadden, Vliehors (Cornfield). In May was there such a trip organized. After a fairly quiet crossing on the ferry we were obtained with vans.
We were driven by a Unimog to the tower. The program started early in the morning with two planes of Kleine Brogel Airbase. The Belgian F-16 threw bombs at various targets and also used their board gun. After “dry runs”, the Belgian F-16 executed “hot runs”. Before returning to their home base of Kleine Brogel several tower fly by’s were flown.
A day before the “FWIT 2008″ (Fighter Weapons Instruction Training) was launched at Leeuwarden Airbase and thus we were treated to a number of brilliant fly by’s. When the Belgians left, four FWIT planes from Leeuwarden joined the range. These aircraft were on their way to the TMA Delta’s above the North Sea. On their way home they passed the range again.
In the afternoon we were treated by an F-16 (tailnbr J-653) of Volkel Airbase and the tail number J-644 “callsign Killer” from Leeuwarden for several “hot and dry-runs” on various targets.
Finally, a Chinook from Soesterberg Airbase, the D-662 practiced with their guns.
At the end of the day we were transported back with an Unimog and went by bus to the ferry.
I would like to thank Captain Bruinink and his team for this fantastic day.
